Swanton volleyball recorded its second straight sweep in a 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 triumph over the visiting Stryker Panthers Tuesday.
Ellie Beroske and Jessica Dohm scored early first set kills to help the Bulldogs jump out to a 5-1 lead.
“For us it’s important to get our confidence early,” said Bulldog coach Kyle Borer. “Getting out to a nice lead where we had some momentum.”
Abby Arnold’s redirect at the net along with a tip and double block with Beroske, extended the Swanton advantage to 13-7, and Alexis Sarvo’s shot from the middle expanded the Bulldog lead to 18-10.
Ashlynn Waddell and Alexis Bergman scored kills before Arnold’s shot from the middle put Swanton at set point and a Panther hit into the net ended the first set.
Two kills by MaKenzie Caldwell, along with four Swanton miscues, helped Stryker jump to an 8-1 lead in the second.
Waddell’s consecutive kills from the left, then two more from Arnold and another by Beroske got Swanton back within 13-8.
Courtney Stewart’s shot stopped the Bulldog run, but Sarvo then Dohm, and finally an Arnold ace got the Dogs back to within 15-14.
Back-to-back kills from Caldwell put the Panthers back up 18-15, but the Bulldogs responded with the next four points, including Kylie Ulch’s set tying ace, then a Panther attack that went into the net to take a 19-18 lead.
Stewart’s two kills helped Stryker regain a 22-20 lead before Waddell, Arnold, Bergman and Dohm scored to put Swanton up 24-22.
Stewart’s kill got Stryker within one but Arnold ended the set on a shot off a Panther blocker.
“The difference in the first two sets, especially in our comeback was our passing,” explained Borer. “We played a cleaner game as a whole in the first set, but in the back half of the second game and actually most of the night I was very pleased with our unforced errors. They were a lot less than what they were the last couple of matches.
“Saturday (in a straight set sweep of Edon) and today we cleaned it up a lot.”
In the third set, Waddell’s tip broke a 7-7 tie and Sammi Taylor’s ace boosted Swanton up 11-7.
Stryker battled to within 14-12 on Caldwell’s kill but Dohm led a charge with a shot off a block attempt and an ace to boost Swanton up 18-12 where Waddell took over from there with three kills to take the Bulldogs home.
Swanton returns to NWOAL play Thursday at Archbold.
