Several first place finishes propelled the Swanton girls track and field team to its first district championship of the millennium on Saturday at Archbold. The Bulldogs won the team title with 136 points, beating out Pettisville who had 115.5. Archbold was third with 89.

Sidney Taylor and Haley Nelson each won a pair of individual events to lead the Bulldogs to the district title in Division III. Taylor took first in both the shot put and discus.

Nelson, who did not run at the league meet last week due to injury, came back strong. She won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was part of the champion 400 meter relay team. Other relay members were Ally Hendricks, Brooke Oberle and Bridget Harlett.

Julia Smith started her final postseason run with a district championship in the high jump. She also qualified for the regional tournament in Tiffin with a third place finish in the 300m hurdles.

Bobbie Oberle won the 100m hurdles for Swanton after not competing in the event at last week’s league meet.

There were several other qualifiers for the Bulldogs as well. Grace Oakes was second behind Taylor in the discus, while Brooke Oberle was second after Nelson in the 200m.

Hannah Grabke set the school record in the pole vault by clearing 9-8. She placed second to move onto the regional meet.

The 800 meter relay team of Bobbie Oberle, Brooke Oberle, Harlett and Nelson was runner-up behind Archbold. Harlett was also fourth in the 100m.

The Bulldogs’ 1600 meter relay team also advanced with a fourth place finish. Members were Smith, Averie Lutz, Alexis Sarvo and Ashlynn Waddell.

Swanton boys

Anthony Howard led the way for the Swanton boys at the Division II district tournament in Defiance on Wednesday and Friday. Howard won the 800m for the Bulldogs.

Dylan Gilsdorf qualified in a pair of individual events. He was third in the high jump and fourth in the 1600m.

The 3200 relay team of Brett Bettinger, Donovan Avalos, Gilsdorf and Howard placed third and also advanced to the regional tournament in Piqua.

As a team Swanton finished 8th out of 16 squads with 31 points. Elida and Wauseon tied for the title, each finishing with 88 points.
