The Swanton girls finished third with 99 points at the Northwest Ohio Athletic League Track and Field Championships which began last Tuesday and concluded Friday at Archbold. The Bulldogs were five points behind Wauseon who took second with 104 points, while the Liberty Center girls won with 134.5 points.

“The coaching staff has been letting the girls know just how special this team is this year,” said girls head coach Gary Moore. “The girls responded to this message by asking the coaching staff to fill in whatever spots is needed to help the team. This came to fruition when a couple of our better runners were held out of the meet for injury reasons. The phrase, “next person up” paid off huge for the league meet. If it wasn’t for that mentality, the girls team would have finished lower.”

Among those not competing was Haley Nelson, who was the defending champion the 100 and 200 meter runs.

The Swanton boys placed sixth with 42 points.

The Bulldog girls had winners Tuesday during the field event finals. Julia Smith won the high jump where she cleared 5 feet, 2 inches. Sidney Taylor, after taking second in the discus, won the shot put for the Dogs.

Hannah Grabke was runner-up for the Dogs in the pole vault. She cleared 9 feet, 6 inches.

During the running finals Friday, Bridget Harlett won the 100 meter dash for Swanton. The Bulldogs’ 4×100 relay of Ally Hendricks, Taylor, Brooke Oberle and Harlett was runner-up.

“The girls, at the beginning of the season, set some pretty lofty goals,” explained Moore. “They are now realizing these goals and they are achieving them. The coaching staff is excited for the rest of the reason, when our injured runners return for the postseason.”

Leading the Evergreen girls was Asia Gensch who took second in the 100m hurdles.

On the boys side, Swanton’s Anthony Howard was victorious in the 800 meter run. The Bulldogs got a runner-up finish in the high jump from Dylan Gilsdorf. He cleared 5 feet, 10 inches.

Evergreen was led by a pair of sprinters. Hunter Vanwert won the 100m for the Vikings, while Reece Serna took home a title in the 200m.

The Swanton boys and Evergreen girls will be at the Division II district tournament at Defiance on Wednesday and Friday. The Swanton girls will be at the Division III district tournament at Archbold on Thursday and Saturday. The Evergreen boys are at the Division III Findlay District on Thursday and Saturday.
