TOLEDO – Swanton baseball earned a big non-league win over St. Francis Thursday, 5-1.
The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out bloop single by Zach Bloom, scoring Hunter Mix. They grabbed another in the fifth, also with two out, when Xavier Williams was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Michael Lawniczak’s double that hit off the fence in right center.
St. Francis scored in the sixth and continued to threaten, but their rally was halted with Lawniczak picking off a runner at first.
Swanton then added three more in the seventh. An RBI single from Mix brought in one run, a squeeze bunt by Austin Luce scored Lawniczak, and Bloom’s sacrifice fly plated Mix.
In his first start of the season, Bloom earned the win on the mound. He pitched a complete game, giving up a run on four hits while striking out five.
After having their game with Cardinal Stritch postponed Friday, the Bulldogs fell at Central Catholic 4-1 on Saturday.
Swanton is at Bowling Green Tuesday before hosting Rossford in a Division III sectional semifinal Wednesday at 5 p.m.
