DEFIANCE – Swanton had a pair of district champions and also a runner-up finisher to help them earn a fourth place finish as a team at the Division III district wrestling tournament which concluded Saturday at Defiance.

The Bulldogs finished with 110.5 points as a team. Genoa was first with 196.5 points, Delta second with 128.5 points, and Milan Edison third at 116.5 points.

Chase Moore at 152 pounds and Tommy Lytle at 285 pounds took home district titles for the Bulldogs, Trevor Schaller was runner-up at 126 pounds, Ryan Marvin took third at 160 pounds and Zach Schaller placed fourth at 120 pounds.

“All their hard work and effort set them up for another successful weekend with some favorable draws and some excellent wrestling out of the kids,” said Bulldog coach Greg Hallett. “They showed up and competed. It was a lot of fun to watch.”

Both Moore and Lytle had to grind out wins in their championship matches. Moore won by a 2-1 ultimate tiebreaker versus Trevor Franks of Lakota.

Meanwhile, Lytle pulled away for a 6-1 win over Noah Koch of Genoa in the 285-pound final.

“In the practice room they get it done,” said Hallett of his two district champions. “Because that’s where those tight matches are won at.”

Also during the weekend, Lytle eclipsed 100 wins for his career.

Trevor Schaller faced a familiar opponent in the 126-pound final, falling to Cole Mattin of Delta 18-3. It was Mattin’s first ever district title.

To get to the championship, Trevor Schaller won 4-0 over Aidan Fry-Silva of Collins Western Reserve, defeated Matthew Dewitz of Oak Harbor 4-2 in overtime, and added a 4-0 win over Ryan Woodring of Paulding.

Marvin fell 5-0 to eventual champion James Limongi of Genoa in the semifinal. He placed third with a 3-1 victory over Austin Grubb of Montpelier in the 160-pound third place match.

Zach Schaller finished fourth after falling to Clay Eagle of Ashland Crestview who pinned him in the third place match.

Mitchell Reisinger is a state alternate after a fifth place finish at 182 pounds. He lost 3-2 in the consolation semifinal match to Mason Babcock of Archbold, dropping him to the fifth place final where he beat Nicholas Brown of Ayersville.

Delta had three other state qualifiers. Dylan Rogers finished runner-up at 195 pounds, Zack Mattin (106) took third, and Dalton Richard (220) placed fourth.

“Our boys wrestled a great tournament,” said Delta coach Anthony Carrizales. “All around, they really had a great day today. But you always look at like the ones that got away. With (JD) Osborn and (Dawson) Swicegood especially, in that tight match he was having (in the consolation semifinal). Got caught and pinned.

“But as far as getting four to state, it’s exciting. I think we got four guys that can go down and compete and look for a placement. It’s just one of those deals where we regroup and I guess get ready for next week.”

Hallett was encouraged by the performance of all the Northwest Ohio Athletic League wrestlers that competed. There were a total of 17 wrestlers from the league that qualified for state in Division III.

“You’ve been in this for so long. You spend so much time with one another, you all want the best for one another,” explained Hallett. “All the league kids. It is nice, we have a great representation in the NWOAL this upcoming weekend at the state tournament. That’s a testament to the kids and to the area coaches.”

The OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament is Thursday through Saturday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
