ARCHBOLD – Swanton wrestling started the postseason off strongly at the Division III Archbold sectional on Friday and Saturday with a second place team finish. The Bulldogs had five champions and nine wrestlers overall advance to the district tournament by placing in the top four of their weight class.
Zach Schaller started things off in the finals for Swanton at 120 pounds. He topped Darion Tracy of Ayersville 5-4 to win the title.
Chase Moore was first at 152 pounds with a 12-3 major decision over Colton Soles of Archbold in the final. Ryan Marvin also won by major decision, topping Kasyn Schaffner of Archbold 12-4 in the 160-pound final.
At 182 pounds, Mitchell Reisinger grabbed Swanton’s fourth title with a 4-1 decision over Nicholas Brown of Ayersville. Thomas Lytle finished off the day for Swanton with a 3-2 decision over Howard Pleasant of Tinora to take the 285-pound championship.
Trevor Schaller and Crew Oberheim also advanced to the championship finals for the Bulldogs. Trevor Schaller fell 9-1 to Cole Mattin of Delta at 126 pounds and at 195 pounds, Oberheim was pinned by Dylan Rogers of Delta.
Zachary Leahey was third at 170 pounds, topping Carson Meyer of Archbold in the third place match after dropping a 5-3 sudden victory match to eventual champion JD Osborn of Delta in the semifinal.
Ethan Branum also advanced for Swanton, placing fourth at 132 pounds.
Noah Saunders advanced to the semifinal at 138 pounds for Swanton before a 6-4 sudden victory loss to Carl Yaney of Liberty Center. After that he had to forfeit his remaining two matches, settling for sixth place.
Archbold claimed the team title with 211.5 points, while Swanton was second at 197. Liberty Center was third with 161 and Delta fourth at 158.5. Evergreen was 13th with 21 points.
The district tournament will be held at Defiance. It starts at 4 p.m. Friday and continues into Saturday. The top four placers in each weight class advance to the state tournament in Columbus.
