Swanton had four make the finals of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League wrestling tournament, which they hosted Saturday, but it wasn’t exactly the result they were looking for.
The Bulldogs finished fifth overall, with 141.5 points. Wauseon won the tournament going away with 280.5 points, Archbold came in with 171.5, Delta 167, and Liberty Center 156 to round out the top four.
“Some things didn’t go our way, but (it was) some things that we can’t control. So, (I) can’t get too angry,” stated head coach Greg Hallett. “We’ll get back in the room this week. We look forward to a good sectional tournament.”
Swanton notched one league champion as heavyweight Tommy Lytle defeated Alex Sosa of Wauseon 3-1 in an ultimate tiebreaker.
“Last time that they’ll ever wrestle each other in high school, so, a good opportunity for him (Lytle) to get the win for the league championship,” said Hallett. “It was a good way to end the tournament.”
Lytle reached the final with a pin of Archbold’s Anthony Gonzalez in the semifinal.
Runners-up for the Bulldogs were Zach Schaller at 120 pounds, Chase Moore (152), and Ryan Marvin (160).
Zach Schaller earned a pin and a decision to advance to the championship. An injury in the 120-pound final gave the league title to Alex Slattman of Wauseon.
After a pair of byes, Moore pinned Colton Soles of Archbold in 3:28 to advance to the 152-pound final. However, he faced a stiff challenge going against defending state runner-up Sandro Ramirez of Wauseon. Ramirez took the championship with a 16-6 major decision.
Similar to Zach Schaller, Marvin earned a pin and a decision to make the final at 160 pounds. It was there that he fell to Xavier Torres of Wauseon 9-5.
The Bulldogs had a pair of third place finishers in Trevor Schaller (126) and Crew Oberheim (195), while Zack Leahey (170) and Greg Wilson (220) took fourth.
Zeth Zawodni (113), Gage Pachlhofer (132), and Connor Cass (182) added fifth place finishes.
Evergreen’s best finish came from Brian Floyd, who defeated Carson Meyer of Archbold 6-1 to take third at 160 pounds.
Tony Boger took fifth for the Vikings at 145 pounds, while Travis Mersing (138) and Brenden Matuszak (195) each placed sixth.
The Bulldogs, with area teams like Delta and Evergreen, will compete in the Division III sectional tournament at Archbold this Friday and Saturday.
