The Evergreen boys basketball team has high hopes for the season with a bevy of key players back.
“Experience,” said veteran head coach Jerry Keifer of his team’s strengths. “We return 5 letterwinners and 4 starters back from last year. We have worked very hard over the summer to get better and stronger.”
A key returnee for the Vikings is Mason Loeffler, who was second team All-Northwest Ohio Athletic League, second team District 7 and honorable mention all-district a season ago. Loeffler averaged 14.7 points per game in his freshman season.
They also return Chandler Lumbrezer (honorable mention all-league, District 7), Bryce Hudik (honorable mention all-league, District 7), Josh Dowling and Nate Brighton.
Lumbrezer and Hudik were the team’s second and third leading scorers a season ago, as Lumbrezer averaged 10.5 ppg and Hudik 7.7 ppg.
The Vikings are adding newcomers John Machacek, Zack Lumbrezer, Colt Rosti, Jack Etue, Nick Beemer and Mason Henricks.
Letter winners lost from last season are Phoenix VanOstrand, Teagan Pinkelman, and Austin Blanton.
A season ago, the Vikings finished 9-14 overall and 2-5 in the NWOAL.
“Our greatest weakness is defensive rebounding, and free throw shooting,” said Keifer.
Since both teams advanced to state last year in their respective divisions, it comes as no surprise that Keifer has Wauseon and Archbold competing for the top spot in the league race.
He has Bryan finishing behind them, then he has his Vikings, Liberty Center, Swanton, Patrick Henry and Delta.
“We are excited about the season, we hope to contend for a league title and put ourselves in a position to get a favorable seed in the sectional tournament and make a run,” said Keifer.
