COLUMBUS – Swanton closed out their dual wrestling season with a 42-22 loss to eventual state champion Milan Edison in the quarterfinal of the Division III State Dual Wrestling Tournament Sunday at St. John Arena in Columbus.
The Bulldogs were the fifth seed taking on the fourth seeded Chargers.
“They wrestled tough up and down the lineup and that’s all you can ask for,” said Swanton coach Greg Hallett of his team’s performance. “We lost some close matches. We knew, there was a couple in there that could be tough. That could go either way. So it’s all preparation, because, we are gonna see a lot of these guys at the district tournament too.”
Edison picked up a pin by Ray Adams over Zach Schaller at 106 pounds, then a forfeit victory for Gabe Mina-Vazquez at 113 pounds, and 5-2 decision for Dylan Burns against Trevor Schaller before Swanton got on the board.
Winning first for the Bulldogs was Dylan Cook (126) with a 9-0 major decision against Trent Werner, making the score 15-4.
However, the Chargers followed with three straight wins, starting with a 5-3 win for Max Wolfe (132) over Swanton’s Gage Pachlhofer. They then added a pin by Brady Barnett (138) against Noah Saunders, and a 4-2 win by Alex Neuberger (145) against Chase Moore which put the margin at 27-4.
Swanton went 4-3 in the final seven matches.
At 152 pounds, Ryan Marvin defeated Edison’s Collin Mancuso 7-6. Later, at 170 pounds, Tyler Houston downed John Neer 7-2.
The Dogs also got pins from Greg Wilson (220) and Tommy Lytle to close out the night.
But, winning down the stretch for Edision were Dalton Burns (160) over Zack Leahey 8-3, Joey Kasper (182) by pin against Mitchell Reisinger, and Sam Stoll (195) by pin against Crew Oberheim.
Despite the disappointing result, Hallett was proud of his team.
“They can all say that they are state qualifiers now,” he said. “That’s an accomplishment in and of itself. But we are not satisfied (with the result).”
He hopes that his team will benefit from the experience.
“This is a little bit bigger stage in a lot of respects,” concluded Hallett. “So, the more we can put them in those situations. Where they can feel that (pressure), and experience that, get over any nervousness or jitters that they have, the more it’s gonna pay off.”
Swanton will wrestle at the Northwest Ohio Athletic League tournament on Saturday at Patrick Henry.
