In a struggle to gain momentum for both teams, a two-out RBI single from Eric Parker in the top of the seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie as Wauseon defeated Swanton on the road in ACME baseball Thursday, 7-6.
CJ Moser started the frame with a single, and after a lineout, he advanced to second on a ball in the dirt. The next hitter grounded out, but Parker came through with the big knock to break the tie.
The Indians loaded the bases on Trevor Rodriguez’ single and a walk by Kris Moebs, however, Swanton relief pitcher Hunter Mix drew a foul out off the bat of Tony Banister to avert further damage.
The Bulldogs got the tying run to third in the bottom half of the inning when Zach Bloom drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on Carter Swank’s sacrifice bunt, then to third on a passed ball. However, with Wyatt Lake on first after a walk, the Dogs attempted a double steal but Bloom was cut down at the plate. Derek Floyd then grounded out to end it.
Both teams notched multiple runs in the first inning, beginning with Wauseon who got RBI singles from Zach Stipp and Marcel Barajas to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Dogs answered with a three-spot in their half of the inning.
The first three batters would reach as Xavier Williams was hit by a pitch, Tommy Chonko singled, and Michael Lawniczak tripled to left field to score a pair and tie the game. Following a pop out, Josh Adcock reached on an error, scoring Lawniczak to give the Dogs the advantage at 3-2.
Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to put the leadoff man on for the Indians in the top of the second. He eventually came around to score on a Bzovi single two outs later.
Now tied at three runs apiece, and with a new pitcher in Bzovi on the mound for Wauseon, Floyd kept the hit parade going for Swanton with a single to left.
Following a Bulldog strikeout, Chonko drew a walk and both he and Floyd advanced on a double steal. Bzovi got the next hitter to ground out, but Mix’s single plated Floyd to give the Dogs the lead back.
In the top of the third, Moser pegged a one-out double to center field. Barajas followed with a two-out RBI single which knotted the score at four.
The Indians then added two more in their half of the fourth. They used a pair of base on balls and an error to load the bases with just one out.
They then got an RBI single from Trent Armstrong and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brooks Gype to make it 6-4 through 3 1/2 innings.
Swanton did not go quietly, waiting until their second to last at bat to tie the score once again.
Lake led off with a walk, the next batter struck out, Williams was hit by a pitch, and Chonko singled to fill the bases. This allowed Lawniczak to walk in a run, while Mix singled to score another to make it 6-6 through six.
Bzovi led the Wauseon offense as he went 2 for 2 with a walk and an RBI. Lawniczak was 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBIs for Swanton.
Swanton is next in action Tuesday when they are at Archbold in a doubleheader with the Junior ACME starting at 5 p.m. The Junior ACME game will be first.
