Evergreen softball has high hopes for the 2022 team under Coach Jim Zoltowski, who is entering his first season at the helm of the program. He comes in with 23 years of coaching experience and a 135-149 record.
“Our goal is to compete for a league championship and go make a long run in the postseason,” said Zoltowski on his outlook for the season.
Senior leadership and experience are strengths for the Vikings this season according to Zoltowski. Having a new coach and inexperience competing at the varsity level are their weaknesses.
Evergreen has multiple key pieces back from the 2021 squad that finished 15-9.
Macy Chamberlin (3B/C) is back after a freshman season which saw her earn first team All-Northwest Ohio Athletic League honors, be named first team All-Northwest District, and honorable mention All-Ohio. She held a .690 batting average, had 13 home runs and 38 runs batted in.
Jocelyn Schuster (CF) is back after garnering second team all-league and all-district honors a season ago. She hit .421 with 8 home runs and 31 RBIs.
Another key returnee for the Vikings is Skylee Raker (1B), who was honorable mention all-league a season ago. Raker held a .320 batting average and drove in 12 runs.
They also get back Kennedy Coolman (3B/LF), Brooklyn Richardson (P/1B), Jessica Riggs (OF), Emma Vaculik (OF), Lucy Nichols (OF), Marissa Van Denk (SS) and Shelby Moore (OF). The Vikings are adding newcomers Hannah Double (OF), Lucy Serna (UT), Evy Shrader (P/INF), and Kira Keller (P/INF).
Evergreen ended last season with a loss in the Division III district. This season they hope to advance far in tournament and finish at or near the top of the league.
“Within the league and only playing each team (once), no team can be overlooked,” said Zoltowski of the NWOAL race.
Evergreen has a pair of home games next week to kick off the season. They welcome Cardinal Stritch Monday and Otsego on Tuesday.
