Swanton track and field advanced a pair out of the regional meets last week as both Julia Smith and Gunnar Oakes are headed back to state in the high jump.

Smith took fourth in the event in 2015 while Oakes placed 11th.

At the Division II Dayton Regional, Oakes won the high jump after clearing 6-feet-5 inches. He beat out Jacob Meader of Goshen who cleared 6-feet-4 inches.

Also competing for the boys was Jonny Shanks who took 10th in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet-11 inches.

Smith placed third in the high jump at the Division III Tiffin Regional. She cleared 5-feet-2 inches.

Swanton’s 400 relay team of Shae Hallowell, Haley Nelson, Ally Hendricks and Bridget Harlett almost qualified as they finished fifth with a time of 52.46.

In the discus, Swanton’s Sidney Taylor finished seventh with a best throw of 120-feet but did not advance. Heather Williams took ninth in the shot put with a throw of 33-feet-9-and-one quarter inches.

Hannah Grabke ended up in a three-way tie for eighth in the pole vault for the Bulldogs after clearing 9-feet.

The OHSAA state track and field championships begin tomorrow morning and will conclude on Saturday. Smith is set to compete at approximately 4 p.m. on Friday, while Oakes has to wait until Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
