After a slow start, the visitors from Lake broke through to take the lead in the top of the third, then proceeded to add to it as the game wore on in a 13-5 defeat of Swanton in a Division III softball sectional final Friday at Memorial Park.
The Bulldogs came to play out of the gate, getting to Lake pitcher Mackenzie Mickens for three runs in the home half of the first thanks to Taylor Forrest’s three-run home run. Rachel Waszak and Brie Williams each had singled to put a pair of runners on base for Forrest.
However, the Flyers grabbed the lead in the top half of the third.
Elizabeth Cowell’s one-out walk was followed up by a two-run shot off the bat of Jessie Materni, trimming the Bulldog lead at 3-2. Kenzie Jackson doubled and was brought home on Natalie Patrick’s two-bagger, then a Taryn DeWese RBI single plated pinch-runner Vayda Delventhal which put Lake in front, 4-3.
Forrest replaced Williams in the circle for Swanton in the fourth, but the Flyers continued their attack.
Abigail Tajblik getting hit by a pitch started the Flyer offensive flurry. Cowell’s sacrifice bunt moved Tajblik up and made for the second out, then Lake went to work.
Materni singled home Tajblik. Jackson reached on a high throw to first putting runners at the corners, and Patrick followed with an RBI single to make the difference 6-3.
Then came the big blow of the frame, DeWese’s monster home run over the fence in left marking three runs and pushing their lead to 9-3.
Materni made it 11-3 in the fifth with a two-run double to center. They also added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
For Swanton, they loaded the bases with one out in their half of the fifth, scoring a run by way of Trista Eitniear’s ground out that brought home Jayden Hendricks from third.
The Dogs added another in the sixth on Waszak’s RBI single that plated Emma Operacz.
Williams suffered the loss in the circle after pitching the first three innings. Mickens got the win for Lake.
