Swanton cruised to a 50-32 win over Northwood on Monday, Dec. 28, but the next night allowed 50 in a 50-37 defeat at the hands of a much-improved Liberty Center squad in the championship of the Bob Fisher Holiday Classic girls tournament.
The Bulldogs got behind big early versus the Tigers, and trailed 27-12 at halftime.
In the third quarter, four straight points from Liberty Center’s Alyssa Giesige put Swanton down further, 34-16, with 2:34 on the clock.
However, they did manage to inch their way back from that point.
Frankie Nelson scored inside, then Sam Taylor converted a mid-range jumper, and Aricka Lutz’ three-point play made it 34-23 at the 1:09 mark.
With 32 ticks left in the third, another hoop inside for Nelson pulled the Dogs within nine. But that’s when the Tigers would respond by building the lead back up.
Cassidy Chapa split a pair of free throws for the Tigers, then Samantha Engler’s long-range three as the quarter horn sounded got it to 38-25. Their lead was increased to 15 by way of Lucy Jones’ bucket inside 12 seconds into the fourth and they refused to look back.
Made shots by Katie Floyd within 11 seconds of each other got Swanton within 10 at 43-33 with 2:35 left; however, there simply wasn’t enough time to climb all the way back.
Aricka Lutz finished 12 points and Taylor nine for Swanton. Chapa paced LC with 12 points.
Averie Lutz had 15 points and Aricka 10 to lead the Bulldogs against Northwood.
Swanton hosts Ottawa Hills Monday and is at Evergreen on Friday in NWOAL play. They are then scheduled to travel to Fayette on Saturday.
