It was a busy week on the mats for Swanton wrestling as they won a pair of Northwest Ohio Athletic League duals, went 1-1 at the OHSAA team dual tournament, and competed at an invitational.
For the second weekend in a row, Trevor Schaller brought home a tournament championship. On Saturday, Schaller won the 106 pound title at the LCC Thunderbird Invitational after winning at Van Buren the previous Saturday.
As a team, the Bulldogs finished in 14th place with two placers. Mechanicsburg won the team title with 276.5 points, followed by Miami East 153.5 and Covington 151.5.
Archbold was fifth with 130 points. Swanton tallied 74.5 team points.
Schaller made quick work of his first two opponents. He pinned Caleb Langhals of Columbus Grove in 1:04 and Daniel White of Cory-Rawson in 1:20.
Then in the quarterfinal, Schaller pinned top seed Tyler Sandwisch of Woodmore in 5:26. In the semifinal, he won a hard fought match, 4-2, over Wayne Trace’s Tyler Bauer to advance to the final.
He capped off his title run with a 7-1 victory over Jackson Hugentobler of Madeira.
J.D. Reisinger and Zack Leahey each finished sixth for the Bulldogs. At 126 pounds, Reisinger fell to Richie Stalnaker of Newark Catholic in the fifth place match. Leahey fell 16-1 to Cody Dickson of Spencerville in the fifth place final at 145 pounds.
Duals
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs competed in the opening rounds of Regional Dual Team Tournament in Division III at Eastwood. They won their opening match over Otsego 51-18, but fell to Eastwood 48-30 in the Region 17 quarterfinal.
Zack Schaller and J.D. Reisinger each won a pair of matches.
On Thursday, Swanton won a pair of Northwest Ohio Athletic League duals. They defeated Montpelier 52-24 and Patrick Henry 62-9.
Next up for the Bulldogs is an NWOAL quad at Delta where Swanton will face Bryan and Delta. Then, Swanton will compete at the NWOAL Tournament on Saturday at Montpelier.
