NAPOLEON – Brodie Stevens led Swanton at the Division III district wrestling tournament with a runner-up finish at 285 pounds, earning a trip to the state wrestling tournament in Columbus.
Stevens, the Archbold sectional champion, opened the tournament with a 9-3 win over Joseph Miller of Northwood and 6-3 win against Josh Logan of New London to advance to the semifinal
In the semifinal, Stevens pinned Tyler Bowman of Eastwood, the Oak Harbor sectional champion, in 2:12. With the win, he secured his state berth and a spot in the final against Caden Hill of Ashland Crestview. Hill, the Plymouth sectional champion with just one loss on the season, was able to get the best of Stevens, pinning him in 3:43.
At 152, Tyler Gowing of Swanton dropped his first match to Brett Sandwisch of Woodmore, before rebounding with a 7-4 win over Van Buren sectional champion Jacob Dillon of McComb. But, Gowing was eliminated in the next consolation round, falling to Levi Kibler of Ashland Crestview 2-1 in a tight match.
Hunter Gowing dropped his first two matches at 145 pounds.
Swanton took 27th as a team with 21 points. Milan Edison won a district title with 227 points. Delta was second with 118 points, Oak Harbor third with 106.5, Eastwood fourth with 102.5 and Archbold fifth at 65.5.
Winning individual titles for Delta were Zack Mattin at 113 pounds and Austin Kohlhofer at 220 pounds. Max Hoffman finished third at 170 pounds and Evan Hanefeld fourth at 106 pounds to also advance to state.
Logan York had the best result for Evergreen. He won his first match at 195 pounds, 16-5 over Lucas Zamudio of Gibsonburg before falling 5-4 to Bryce Sheets of Mowhawk.
York then topped Kaeden Wentz of Carey 13-8 before dropping a 3-1 decision to Zane Finley of Lucas.
The OHSAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University. On Friday wrestling begins at 3 p.m. with the D-III championship preliminaries.
Stevens, who is 39-8 on the season, will open with Jayden Heltsley of Arcanum, who is 34-4. The winner will face either Smithville’s Andrew Beery (35-11) or Easton Hitchens (41-2) of Sarahsville Shenandoah.
