After advancing to the Division V playoffs three straight seasons from 2015-17, Swanton football will remain in that division, it was announced last week by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
The Bulldogs won a game each in the 2015 and 2016 playoffs, and bowed out in the first round to eventual state runner-up Eastwood in 2017.
The injury-riddled Bulldogs struggled to a 3-7 record in 2018. They will look to improve on that with new coach Denton Saunders at the helm.
Each of Swanton’s non-league opponents in 2019 will be from a higher division. Rossford is Division IV, Rogers is Division III and Bowsher Division I.
Both Delta and Evergreen will remain in Division VI. Evergreen finished 4-6 last season, while Delta was 2-8.
Delta last made the playoffs in 2015, while Evergreen’s only playoff berth was in 1984.
Elsewhere in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League, Archbold and Liberty Center will both be dropping down a division, joining Evergreen and Delta in Division VI.
Wauseon and Bryan will again be Division IV and Patrick Henry stays in Division VII.
The specific region assignments within each division will be announced next week, along with the 2019 football playoffs format. The state championship games return to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Dec. 5-7.
