KANSAS, Ohio – Ryan Marvin and Zach Schaller are headed back to Columbus to finish their Swanton High School wrestling careers. Both had difficult draws but got the job done when they needed to.
Marvin, a sectional champion at 152 pounds, was placed on the same half of the bracket as state favorite Kevin Contos of Genoa. Marvin topped Gabe Vasquez of Oak Harbor and Levi Kibler of Ashland Crestview to advance to the semifinal against Contos.
Marvin dropped the semifinal 6-0 to the eventual district champion to fall to the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinal he got by Plymouth sectional champion D.J. Slone of Willard 5-4 to punch his ticket to state.
Marvin defaulted in the third place match to finish fourth.
Schaller faced the unenviable task of wrestling against Cameron Dickman of Oak Harbor in the opening round. Dickman was the sectional champion at Lake and after beating Schaller 11-5 went on to win the district title at 126 pounds.
Schaller dropped to the consolation bracket where he faced a long road to a state tournament appearance. He started with decisions over Ryan Gross of St. Paul and Ashton Varney of Montpelier.
He then pinned Van Buren sectional champion Wyatt Lucas of Arcadia and Jakey Neer of Milan Edison to secure his trip to Columbus. In the third place match he fell to Dakota Blanton of Ashland Crestview 12-4.
Two other Swanton wrestlers also competed at the district tournament.
Ethan Branum won his first match by pin over Thane Gallegos of Riverdale at 138 pounds. But, he was then pinned by eventual champion Dylan D’Emilio of Genoa. In the consolation bracket he was pinned by Wil Roth of Sandusky St. Mary’s.
At 113 pounds, Zachary LaPlante dropped his opening bout to Cristian Lecki of Lake. He rebounded in the consolation with a major decision over Aiden Mowrey of Van Buren before falling 3-1 to Hunter Lacy of Seneca East.
Evergreen had a pair of wrestlers at the district tournament. Brian Floyd pinned Zane Finley of Lucas in his opening match at 160 pounds, but then fell to T.J. Rhamey of Patrick Henry 13-5 and Hayden Jacoby of Carey 12-7, ending his season.
At 195 pounds, Evergreen’s Logan York was pinned by Jake Sage of Oak Harbor to start the tournament. But he responded with a 6-3 win over Caleb Pierre of Liberty-Benton before being eliminated by Tristen Saeger of Delta 6-2.
Schaller (39-12) will open the state tournament against Gavin Weaver of Newcomerstown. Weaver, a junior, is 45-3 on the season and placed fifth in the state at 113 pounds last season.
Marvin, who was eighth in the state last season at 160 pounds, opens with Keringten Martin of Covington. Marvin is 40-5 this season, while Martin is 50-2.
The 2019 Individual State Wrestling Tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday at the Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State University campus. Wrestling begins at 3 p.m. Thursday. Finals start at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
