Four Bulldog grapplers advance

ARCHBOLD – Ryan Marvin led four Swanton wrestlers who are moving on to the district competition following their performance at the Division III Archbold sectional on Friday and Saturday.

Marvin avenged two previous losses to Liberty Center’s Tyler Kay to win the sectional championship at 152 pounds. He won 3-1 in sudden victory to claim the title.

To get there, Marvin started with pins of Joseph Romes of Ayersville and Bryce Krill of Fairview. In the semifinal he beat Archbold’s Carson Meyer 7-3.

Ethan Branum and Zachary LaPlante each finished third for the Bulldogs.

Branum opened with a pin before falling to Kaden Blair of Fairview 20-13 in the quarterfinal at 138 pounds. He wrestled through the consolation bracket with a pin of Jayce Helminiak of Delta, clinching a spot in the district tournament. Branum capped the comeback by avenging the earlier loss to Blair by pinning him in 2:54 to finish third.

LaPlante opened with a pair of pins in under 40 seconds at 113 pounds. But, he then was pinned by eventual champion Cameron Henneman of Liberty Center in the semifinal.

He pinned Tyler Winzeler of Ayersville in 56 seconds to secure his district berth. He then claimed a 1-0 decision over Carson Chiesa of Delta to place third.

Zach Schaller overcame injury to advance at 126 pounds for Swanton. In the semifinal, Schaller injury defaulted putting him in the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinal, he managed to pin Coltyn Aden of Ayersville to advance to the district. Schaller also injury defaulted in the third place match to finish fourth.

Also for Swanton, Xavier Wiemken was fifth, Connor Cass sixth, and Ian Saunders sixth.

As a team Swanton finished sixth with 104.5 points. Delta won the team title with 213 points.

Evergreen had two wrestlers advance to the district tournament with top four finishes.

Brian Floyd led the way with a second place finish at 160 pounds. He pinned Weston Dick of Montpelier in the quarterfinal before claiming a 2-1 decision over Delta’s Max Hoffman in the semifinal. He dropped a tight 9-8 decision to Kasyn Schaffner of Archbold in the final.

Logan York was fourth at 195 pounds. He fell to Edgerton’s Micah Ritter 7-2 in the semifinal before pinning Kyle Ordway of Tinora to secure a district spot. He fell 4-1 to Tristen Saeger of Delta in the third place match.

The district tournament is Friday and Saturday at Lakota High School. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament.
