Swanton had three runner-up finishes Saturday at the Northwest Ohio Athletic League wrestling tournament held in Wauseon. The Bulldogs were fifth as a team, while Wauseon was team champion for the third straight season.

Ryan Marvin placed second at 152 pounds for the Bulldogs. He won by major decision, 13-5, against Carson Meyer of Archbold in the semifinal before falling in the final to Tyler Kay of Liberty Center 5-3. Marvin and Kay are two of the top-rated 152 pound wrestlers in the state in Division III.

Zach Schaller topped Ashton Varney of Montpelier 5-2 in the 126-pound semifinal. But, he was pinned by Nolan Ray of Wauseon in the final.

Xavier Wiemken pinned Tyler Echler of Liberty Center in the 170-pound semifinal. In the final, he was pinned by three-time league champion Xavier Torres of Wauseon at 3:20.

The Bulldogs also had three third place finishes. Zach LaPlante pinned Cameron Henneman of Liberty Center in the third place match at 113 pounds.

Swanton’s Ethan Branum pinned Brayden Custer of Montpelier in the 138-pound third place match.

At 160 pounds, Ian Saunders topped Brian Floyd of Evergreen 9-5 in the third place match.

Other placers for Swanton included Cody DeKoeyer, fifth at 132 pounds; Tyler Gowing, sixth at 145 pounds; Zaven Waddell, sixth at 220 pounds; and Brody Stevens, sixth at 285 pounds.

Evergreen, in addition to Floyd placing fourth at 160 pounds, Logan York took fourth at 195.

Swanton and Evergreen will both be in action on Friday and Saturday when they start down the road to Columbus and the state tournament. They will be in the Division III sectional at Archbold.
