DEFIANCE – Swanton finished with a pair of runner-up performers at the Defiance Tri-State Border War wrestling tournament held Dec. 28-29.
The Bulldogs tied for 15th as a team in the 42-team tournament with 70 points. Niles, Mich. won the tournament with 168.5 points.
Zach Schaller was runner-up at 126 pounds and Ryan Marvin took second at 152 pounds.
Schaller earned pins over Gage Cutlip-Pash of Indian Lake and Logan Hunter of Mendon in his first two matches. In the quarterfinal, he shut out Owen Tong of Tinora 10-0, then reached the final with a 6-2 decision versus Alex McIntosh of Dowagiac Union. The first place match went to Izumi Harney of Sycamore, who bested Schaller 11-3.
Marvin scored major decision wins over Alton Mullinax of Columbia City and Dylan Pitts of Columbus Grove, plus a pin of Jesse Montel of Bluffton to reach the 152-pound semifinal. He advanced to the championship with a 7-6 victory over Zach Walsh of Granville. In the final, Marvin fell 7-2 against Skyler Crespo of Mendon.
Swanton hosts a Northwest Ohio Athletic League quad with Bryan, Delta and Patrick Henry Thursday beginning at 6 p.m.
