Wrestling seasons begins at Northwood

NORTHWOOD – Swanton and Evergreen both kicked off the wrestling season at the Derr Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Evergreen finished 13th and Swanton 16th at the 27-team invitational.

Whitmer won the tournament with 232.5 points, followed by Otsego at 227.5 and Northview 214.

Zachary LaPlante led the Bulldogs, who sent eight wrestlers to Northwood, with a fourth place finish at 113 pounds. He made it to the semifinal with a pin of Tyler Camp of St. John’s. He dropped an 8-1 decision to Riley Prosser of St. Marys in the semi and fell to the consolation bracket.

Ian Saunders was fifth for Swanton at 170 pounds. He fell in the quarterfinal but rebounded to finish fifth by pinning Mohamed Salameh of Southview.

Also for Swanton, Zeth Zawodni was eighth at 126 pounds, Cody Dekoeyer was ninth at 138 pounds and Zaven Waddell was ninth at 220 pounds.

The Bulldogs did not send a full team to Northwood, as state placer Ryan Marvin and state qualifier Zach Schaller were among those who didn’t wrestle.

Brian Floyd led Evergreen with a third place finish at 170 pounds. He fell in the semifinal but topped Zack McDonald of Northview in sudden victory in the third place match.

Logan York was fourth at 195 pounds for the Vikings. He lost in the semi, and rebounded with a 10-7 win over Brayden Butzin of Perrysburg before falling in the third place match.

At 145 pounds, Travis Mersing was fourth for Evergreen. He dropped the semifinal match, then pinned Cameron Huber of Perrysburg before being defeated in the third place match.
