Unemployment rates in the area fell slightly in October, according to data released last week by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
In Fulton County, the jobless rate dropped to 4.0 percent in October from 4.1 percent in September. Last October, the unemployment rate was also 4.0 percent.
Lucas County’s rate dropped a little more than Fulton’s falling to 5.3 percent in October from 5.7 percent in September. Last October, the rate was 5.0 percent.
Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary October 2017 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 2.8 percent in Mercer County to a high of 7.1 percent in Monroe County. From September, unemployment rates decreased in 39 counties, increased in 23 counties, and remained the same in 26 counties. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio was 4.5 percent in October.
Nine counties had unemployment rates below 3.5 percent in October. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer were: Putnam, 3.0 percent; Holmes and Wyandot, 3.2 percent; Auglaize, Delaware, Hancock, and Union, 3.3 percent; and Madison, 3.4 percent.
Six counties had unemployment rates at or above 6.0 percent in October. The counties with the highest rates, other than Monroe were: Meigs, 6.9 percent; Jefferson, 6.4 percent; Noble, 6.2 percent; and Scioto and Trumbull, 6.0 percent.
Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in October 2017, down from 5.3 percent in September 2017. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 4,300 over the month, from a revised 5,546,600 in September to 5,550,900 in October 2017.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in October was 296,000, down 9,000 from 305,000 in September. The number of unemployed has increased by 11,000 in the past 12 months from 285,000. The October unemployment rate for Ohio increased from 5.0 percent in October 2016.
The U.S. unemployment rate for October was 4.1 percent, down from 4.2 percent in September, and down from 4.8 percent in October 2016.
