Families can enjoy an afternoon of old-time baseball on Saturday, July 22 as the Great Black Swamp Frogs, the Spiegel Grove Squires, the Elkhart County Railroaders and the Sauder Village Windmills gather for a Vintage Base Ball Tournament at Sauder Village. With base ball games being played using rules from the 1860s and a chance for kids to run the bases, this fun-filled event is sure to be a big hit with families throughout the region!
“We’re so excited to have our own Sauder Village Windmills team competing in the Vintage Base Ball Tournament again this year,” shared Kim Krieger, PR/Media Relations. “Throughout the day guests will enjoy a fun-filled day of base ball with six games being played on two fields.”
Originally developed in the Midwest, vintage base ball follows the rules and customs established early in baseball’s history. This is the seventh year for a Vintage Base Ball Tournament to be held at Sauder Village. There will be six games played throughout the afternoon. Game times are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. A schedule of games is available online at www.saudervillage.org.
The first games will begin at 11 a.m. on the east side of the Historic Village. Dressed in vintage uniforms, the vintage base ball players will work to bring the history of the game of base ball to life. Teams will play shortened games in the pasture area and will play by 1860s rules. The winning team will receive the hand-made travelling trophy made at Sauder Village. Between the games, children will have a chance to run the bases.
Many other events are planned yet this summer at Sauder Village including the Doll & Teddy Bear Show and Sale on Aug. 5-6, a new “Harry Potter Days” event Aug. 11-12, the 21st Annual Rug Hooking Week to be held Aug. 14-19, and the Barbershop Concert on Aug. 26.
