Local fashionistas may have noticed a few well-dressed mannequins gracing the windows of the historic 1800s building located at 117 North Main St. in Swanton.
With a nod to that historic era, along with the popularity of shows like “Downton Abbey” and “Mr. Selfridge,” Swanton’s newest addition, You-nique Bou-tique, stirs echoes of that bygone era with brand new fashions and trends.
You-nique Bou-tique, a modern boutique with a vintage flare, had a soft opening in early May to a collection of unsuspecting customers who happened by Stapleton Insurance, the Elks, and Swanton Chiropractic Center.
“We’re still hanging new inventory and styling our displays” said Julie Berry, business owner and buyer, “but so many people were popping by and trying to get in, we decided to open before our official grand opening.”
Affectionately called “You Bou” by regular clients who visit Berry’s additional locations in La Porte and Shipshewana, Ind., and her winter Boutique in Mesa, Ariz., she offers brand-new fashions and eclectic jewelry for ladies who love to dress and feel unique.
“Our style is vintage-inspired,” said her sister, fashion stylist, Joyce Berry, “Ruffles, layers, lace, and crochet; very feminine, and extremely pretty. I love to help our customers pull together a special outfit or suggest an embellished top that works well with a beloved skirt for a fresh new look.”
Why Swanton? Berry explained, “We looked at various historical small towns in northwest Ohio, but when we met with the Swanton Chamber of Commerce we felt extremely welcomed. Each time we visited we just felt at home here. This area has that ‘small-town with a big-heart’ vibe, and we hope Swanton and surrounding communities will embrace us so we can be a stable, long-term option for fashionable ladies.”
With a bit of room to grow, You Bou showcases several girlfriend/daughter gift lines and will soon launch Shu Bou, a seperate salon highlighting the newest in shoes, sandals, boots, and handbags. There will also be Beau Bou, a selection of male-centric gifts, Berry added.
