Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz has announced that, effective in 2017, the semiannual real estate tax due dates will be every first Wednesday in February (first half) and every last Wednesday in July (second half).
As a result, the tax year 2016 (payable in 2017) due dates will be Wednesday Feb. 1, 2017 for the first half, and Wednesday July 26, 2017 for the second half.
Kapszukiewicz said the change was made in order to improve the processing of payments, while also providing for the proper calculation of penalties for delinquent accounts. Because there is a critical Aug. 1 penalty assessment for prior-year taxes, the summer (second half) bill requires a July due date. In those years when the end of July occurred on a weekend, some taxpayers have been charged late payment penalties when they mistakenly assumed that the due date would be moved to the next business day (in August).
Kapszukiewicz is confident that people will grow accustomed to the notion that real estate tax bills will always be due on a Wednesday, the first one in February for the winter bill (first half) and the last one in July for the summer bill (second half).
“As always, I encourage people to pay attention to their tax bills, especially the due dates, and to contact us with any questions. We’re here to help.”
