Staff Report

The Swanton Public Library has several programs planned for adults this month.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

At the age of 63, area resident Cheryl McCormick hiked the 2,187 mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Visit the library on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. as she presents her slide show and shares her tale of this life altering experience.

The program is free and registration is requested. Call 419-826-2760 to register.

Political Cartooning

Ready for a lighter look at the political process? Local political cartoonist Don Lee will share his stories, tips and skills during a presentation on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Those attending can try their hand at this unique art form as well. This free program is open to all but registration is requested.

Cardmaking

The library’s ongoing series of cardmaking classes continues in October with some beautiful autumn cards. Instructor Anna Geis will lead the class from 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22. The $5 supply fee covers 3 cards. Registration is required.

Attention Seniors!

Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. This is the time period when changes to Medicare plans can be made. If you need help with these changes or have questions about insurance, bill paying, applications or assistance programs, set up an appointment with Val Edwards from the Fulton County Senior Center.

She’ll be at the Swanton Library on Thursday, Oct.20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call the Senior Center at 419-337-9299 to schedule an appointment with Edwards.

FCHD Flu Clinic

The Fulton County Health Department will be at the library Thursday, Oct. 27 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. providing flu shots. Many types of insurance plans are accepted, as well as Medicare and Medicaid. No registration is required. Remember to bring your insurance card. Call the Health Department for more information at 419-337-0915.

Yoga Class Line-Up

Instructor Aimee Strohbeck’s yoga classes have attracted a loyal following since their introduction. This month Aimee will offer four different classes. Students are asked to bring a yoga mat and a towel and to wear comfortable, stretchy clothing.

Beginning Yoga will be offered on Mondays, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 10:15 – 11:45 a.m. These sessions are slightly more advanced than those on Thursdays, providing students with an opportunity to expand their skill level. Class fee is $10 per session with multi-session tickets available.

Intro to Yoga will be offered on Thursdays, Oct. 6, 13, and 27 from 10:15- 11:45 a.m. There will be no class on Oct. 20. Class fee is by donation, with proceeds benefitting the library.

Chair Yoga involves the same poses done in a Hatha class, modified to make them gentler while sitting or sometimes standing with a chair for balance and support. Our chair yoga class will be held on Thursdays from 2-3 p.m. Oct. 6, 13, and 27. There will be no class on Oct. 20. Class fee is $5. No mat needed.

Evening Yoga meets on Monday evenings from 7 – 8:15 p.m; ideal for those who are working during the day. In October those dates are the 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Class fee is $10 per session with multi-session classes available.

Knitting

Knitting is in place for the fall season! In October knitters will meet Mondays, Oct. 10 and 24 at 1:30 pm and Wednesdays, Oct. 12 and 26 at 6:30 p.m. This fun group, led by Kathy Queen, welcomes knitters and crocheters of all skill levels. It’s a great opportunity to learn new techniques and enjoy time with other fiber artists.

Chess

Have you always wanted to learn to play chess? Has it been years since you’ve played? Are you looking for a chess partner? Come join the chess group on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. or Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m. Everyone welcome regardless of age or skill level.
