Railroad project possible in Swanton area

Norfolk Southern has a project planned in the Swanton area, but the company has been tight lipped as to exactly what it entails.

As of Friday afternoon, David Pigeon, public relations manager for Norfolk Southern Corp., could only say “the company is constantly looking for ways to safely improve its network.” That is basically the same answer he gave when asked by the Enterprise in May about the project.

Area officials have some but not all of the details. That could change as representatives from the company will be speaking at the Swanton Village Council meeting Monday. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Swanton Village Administrator Rosanna Hoelzle had said previously she had basic information that Norfolk Southern would be working on a project relating to a switching or staging yard. The item on the Aug. 22 Swanton Village Council meeting agenda says there will be a presentation with representatives from Norfolk Southern presenting on a proposed staging yard project.

Most of the project would be in Swanton Township heading east from Hallett Avenue (Fulton Lucas Road) on the north side of the railroad tracks.

The township has hired a law firm due to the project.

“I am able to say Swanton Township’s position is against it and that we hired Schumaker, Loop, and Kendrick in May to represent us against the railroad,” said Jeff Michael, Swanton Township Trustee.

In addition to the Swanton Village Council meeting on Monday, a special council meeting with the purpose of discussing the proposed project has been scheduled for Monday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.
