The Village of Swanton is hosting an informational meeting this week on the upcoming Fulton Township fire levy. Topics will include overlapping jurisdictions, how this affects taxpayers and what actions elected officials plan to take.
The proposed five-year, 1-mill fire levy failed during the low turnout May election. It tied at 74 votes for and 74 against, meaning the levy failed.
Passage would have allowed the double taxing for fire service of some Swanton residents to end. If it had passed, there was a verbal agreement to rescind the collection of taxes for fire service from Fulton Township residents inside the village.
The meeting is 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Swanton Community Center.
