Swanton library plans virtual kids book clubs

Instead of having in-library parties this month, the Swanton Public Library is holding virtual do-it-at-home book clubs for kids. Everyone who participates gets to keep the book.

There will be four age categories: grades K-3, grades 3-5, grades 5-8, and grades 9-12. There’s some overlap so you can choose which book you’d prefer to read.

Every book will come with a blank review form, a few questions you can think about, and a few small activities or crafts that tie into the book. All library officials ask is that you read the book; do as much or as little of the rest of it as you want.

There will be a post for each book on www.splyouth.org for anyone who wants to discuss the book or comment on any of the questions or activities. Review sheets can also be returned to the library, and comments will be posted by library officials.

Everyone who either posts on the site or brings back anything included with the book will also get a small prize at the library.

Storytime

The library is also offering storytime kits for preschool children.

Every month, the library picks two picture books from the website Storyline Online to showcase and put together packets to take home. The books are read by famous people and celebrities and animated using the illustrations. The activities included will be the color game played at storytime, a handout with rhymes and web links, coloring sheets, stickers, activity sheets, a mini maraca, and a craft.

Available November 2-13 preschoolers can get a free copy of “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn, and visit www.storylineonline.net/books/kissing-hand/ to watch actress Barbara Bain narrate the story. Afterwards, enjoy the activities.

From November 16-27 enjoy Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. Visit www.storylineonline.net/books/stellaluna/ and watch actress Pamela Reed read the story. Then, enjoy the activities.

This book will be returned to the library.

There will also be a post for each book on https://www.splyouth.org for anyone who wants to comment on how storytime at home went. Please, only one book/kit per household. If you have any special accommodations, such as extra crafts/activities for more than one participating child, please let a librarian know and they’ll be happy to provide extras.
