Damage had been building on the Hallett Avenue sidewalk in Swanton. Last week, the damage became too much and the sidewalk was closed.
“The approach sidewalks leading to the Hallett Avenue overpass bridge were crumbling,” said Village Administrator Rosanna Hoelzle. “There had been some cracks but this past week, we believe, the extreme heat was the tipping point.”
She spoke with engineers from Lucas County’s Engineers’ Office and asked them if they have any inspection reports, since the bridge is maintained by Lucas County.
“They were kind enough to send reps out who did some review and advised the sidewalk slabs needed to be removed,” said Hoelzle.
The approach is the responsibility of the village. The Public Service Division removed the slabs and placed stone down as a temporary measure.
“They would like to give it a little time to cool off. We hope to have it done within a few weeks,” Hoelzle said.
