The drive between Swanton and Maumee will look different by this fall. Three roundabouts are set to be constructed this summer on U.S. 20A.
Two of the roundabouts are part of an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) project in Swanton Township in the area of Express Industrial Park, south of Toledo Express Airport. Roundabouts will be constructed at the intersections with State Route 295 (S. Berkey Southern Road) and Whitehouse Spencer Road.
The contractor for that project will be Vernon Nagel Incorporated of Napoleon. The cost is of the project is $2.1 million.
There will also be a safety funded project to construct a roundabout at the U.S. 20A intersection with Weckerly Road. The intersection was made a 4-way stop in August 2018 after a safety study done by ODOT.
The contract for that project is expected to be awarded on July 13. The estimated cost is $1.4 million.
Because the projects are nearby on the same road, major work on the first two roundabouts will begin later than it otherwise could have.
“It is likely the construction of these roundabouts will not begin until mid-to-late summer, so the closures will align more closely and ultimately minimize overall impact to drivers,” said Rebecca Dangelo, ODOT District Two public information officer. “We will notify the public prior to the closure.”
The original plan called for the U.S. 20A intersection with Air Cargo Parkway to be removed. That has changed. The intersection will now be changed to allow only right turns in and right turns out.
Utility work has already started at the sites ahead of the main projects.
