BOWLING GREEN – Senator Randy Gardner has invited two veterans of World War II to the opening session of Buckeye Boys State Sunday night to be part of his keynote speech. Gardner and the American Legion of Ohio will honor the veterans for their historic service in WWII and their public service since then.
The event will be at the Stroh Center on the campus of Bowling Green State University at 7:30 p.m.
The veterans are:
• Claud Woodring, Metamora: Sgt. with 1st Army Division – Invasion of Normandy – D-Day. First Boat to Land on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. Amazing story of survival and courage. Purple Heart, Silver Star. Two Bronze Stars.
• Bob Romaker, Perrysburg: Corporal with 5th Marine Division — Battle of Iwo Jima. Saw flag raised following victory at Iwo Jima. One of the most active American Legion members in the region. Member for more than 60 years.
