Powers challenging Schroeder

Incumbent Swanton Township Trustee Gary Schroeder is being challenged by Jeff Powers in the general election.

Jeff Powers

Powers, 59, has not held public elected office, but has held positions related to the United Auto Workers, including elected chief financial officer, chairman of the Board of Trustees, and shop steward.

He is married to Kim and has a daughter, Haley. His education includes CDCAII certifications he said are applicable to the position of trustee including CDL-A.

Why are you running for political office? First and foremost, I love helping people. It has been my life’s work and joy in many elected leadership positions I have had in the past. I believe our township needs the ingredients I possess.

Why should people vote for you? Because we currently lack having a trustee that can be of service and commitment at the levels I can provide 24/7/365. My passion and joy is hard work, and my education, as well as elected leadership experience, has been in full-time service to others for over three decades. This has been an honor.

What are your two main goals, if elected? Address neglected safety concerns in our township. Create transparency in all matters of the governing of our township including financials, downloaded recordings of our meetings, and much, much more.

Gary Schroeder

Schroeder has served as a Swanton Township trustee for the past five years and is currently chairman. He also previously was on the board of zoning appeals and zoning commission in the township.

He has been married to Lori for 49 years and has an associate degree in transportation managment and law. Civic organizations include volunteering in the education department of The Toledo Zoo, where he was named named Volunteer of the Year; former president, ZooEd Educational Organization, The Toledo Zoo; former treasurer, Delta Nu Alpha Transportation; and former president and treasurer of the Fulton County Horseman’s Council and Minnesota Horseowner’s Association, respectively.

Why are you running for office? I am a proven leader in this competitive and complex government environment, giving me insight and understanding on how the residents of Swanton Township can keep their rural lifestyle.

To continue the Smart development in the Toledo Express Airport Joint Economic Development District (JEDD) to promote economic development and business ventures beneficial to Swanton Township.

Fight annexation so that Swanton Township can maintain its rural character, so our residents can continue to keep their livestock, horses, chickens, etc., and keep taxes low.

Why should people vote for you? I have served as a Swanton Township trustee for the past five years. Prior to becoming trustee, I was a member of the Swanton Township Board of Zoning Appeals and Swanton Township Zoning Commission. I served multiple years as the secretary of the Swanton Township Board of Zoning Appeals.

With professional training in Management of Total Quality (MTQ) and Problem Solving Management, I understand how to make Swanton Township operate efficiently and effectively, a key component in keeping taxes low.

I work with the fiscal officer to continue financial accountability and responsibility, and I am dedicated to protecting your tax dollars.

What are your two main goals, if elected? Continuing to grow alternative revenue streams and utilize the current financial environment to eliminate the need for any new taxes.

Fight annexation so that Swanton Township can maintain its rural character and our residents can continue to keep their livestock, horses, chickens, etc. and maintain their rural lifestyle; and protect against higher taxes.
