Alumni golf outing benefits Swanton Local Schools Foundation

The Swanton Local Schools Foundation is pleased to accept a donation of $1,140 from the Alumni Golf Outing, held Aug. 16 at Valleywood Golf Club. The donation was made to the scholarship fund.

Each year the Foundation awards a $500 renewable scholarship to a SHS Senior. The 2019 recipient was Ashlee Never, attending The University of Toledo this fall.

The Alumni Golf Outing is held each year prior to the All Class Reunion, kicking off the Corn Festival in Swanton. As many as 64 Swanton High School alumni and friends have golfed in the event each year, according to Tom Tolford, who has run the outing since Ken Najarian retired. Every year proceeds have gone to the Swanton Athletic Department, or to fund scholarships for Swanton students.

“We really appreciate this donation from the Alumni Golf Outing,” Mona Dyke, Foundation President, said. “We don’t do much fundraising, so we rely on donations such as this.”

The Foundation was originally funded 15 years ago by a donation from Jim Cannaley, in honor of his wife, Linda Najarian Cannaley, a Swanton grad.

They also receive small donations from different classes each year. After their reunions are over they donate the leftover funds. Most recently, the classes of 1964 and 1972 have also made donations.

In addition to scholarships, the SLS Foundation also awards up to six $250 mini-grants to Swanton School District teachers each year; sponsors the annual All Class Reunion and the Distinguished Alumni luncheon; and oversees the Backpack Buddies program that distributes food to needy families weekly during the school year. It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
