A change is coming for utility bills in the Village of Swanton. Village Council recently passed an emergency ordinance approving an agreement with SmartBill for printing and mailing services of utility bills.
At previous meetings, council had discussed mailing delays with utility bills that may be attributed to the United States Postal Service now sending all local mailing to Metro Detroit. There will also be less possibility of bills being lost in the mail, according to mayor Ann Roth.
SmartBill will provide several additional features to the village. That includes the ability to provide more information to water users, such as history of water use and the space to provide more general village information. Using SmartBill will also decrease the amount of time village employees will have to spend on water billing, according to Roth.
Water customers will be able to pay their bill online for a nominal free.
The agreement with SmartBilll, Ltd. for printing and mailing services of village utility bills is for a term of five years.
The ordinance approving the agreement was passed as an emergency measure in order to initiate the billing process beginning in January 2016.
