Swanton High School will bring magic to the stage this week as they present “Mary Poppins Jr.” And, it will include something that hasn’t been seen on the high school’s stage.

“I’m very excited about this show, because it is the first time we are actually flying a character,” said Julie Zedlitz, director. “We hired ZFX Flying Effects to come in and rig up track so Mary Poppins will be able to fly.”

Abby Arnold will play the title role of Mary Poppins. The role made famous by Dick Van Dyke, Bert, will be played by Donovan Avalos.

George and Winifred Banks will be played by Damien Boyer and Hannah Grabke. Jane and Michael Banks will be played by fifth grade students Madelyn Snyder and Hudson Pancoast.

“All of the main characters worked to get the British accent that is expected in this show,” said Zedlitz. “This was a big factor in choosing them.”

The cast also includes Alyssa VanTong as Katie Nanna, Jayden Hendricks at Mrs. Brill, Justyn Bartlett as Robertson Ay, Cody Mohr as Neleus, Savannah Rosenfield as The Bird Woman, Brier Cook as Chairman of the Bank, Garrett Swank as Herr Von Hussler, Garrick Peters as John Northbrook, Megan Maguire as Mrs. Corry, Oliva Bergman as Miss Andrews, Lexi Westhoven as Miss Smythe, Brett Bettinger as Policeman, and Dylan Gilsdorf as Messenger. There are also many chorus members as chimney sweeps, park strollers and bees.

The show, based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time and a popular Broadway musical, has nanny Mary Poppins take the Banks children on magical adventures. It includes several beloved songs such as “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Step In Time.”

The Swanton High School shows will be Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the high school or can be purchased at the door. The cost is $7 for General Admission and $15 for Reserved seating.
