Fun-filled March for kids at SPL

There are several programs planned at Swanton Public Library for kids this month, including the Girls Who Code club.

Swanton Public Library invites girls (and boys) to attend meetings of Girls Who Code, a free after-school club. Attendees in grades 6-12 will build character and coding skills as they learn, plan, build, and celebrate together to create a project they care about.

The next meetings for grades 6-12 are from 4-5 p.m. on Thursdays, March 14 and 28.

Attendees in grades 3-5 will learn the beginning steps of building code by reading and discussing the Girls Who Code book and by completing thematically-related challenges. The next meeting for grades 3-5 is from 1-2 p.m. on Saturdays, March 9 and 23.

There will be activities for kids with zero to some computer science experience, so everyone is welcome.

Register for this free program by visiting the library, calling 419-826-2760, or signing up online at http://www.swantonpubliclibrary.org.

BOLT meeting

The next meeting of Swanton Public Library’s Board of Library Teens (BOLT) of the school year will be on Wednesday, March 6, at 4:30 p.m. Anyone interested in joining this group is invited to attend. Attendees can show up anytime between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

BOLT is an advisory board of students in grades 6 through 12. Members meet regularly one day a month with a youth services librarian. At meetings they discuss books, help plan programs for their peers, provide input on library issues related to teens, assist in selecting teen-related materials, and promote the library to teens. Free snacks are also included.

Anime Club

Come to the Swanton Public Library from 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, for an afternoon all about anime. Watch three episodes of anime chosen by the attendees, or by the random button. Japanese food, snacks, and drinks will also be provided. No registration required and the club is free.

Paws to Read

Paws to Read combines kids, dogs, and books. Children sign up to read aloud for 15 minutes to a certified therapy dog, who is happy just to listen. Improve reading skills and have fun reading with a friendly dog at the same time.

Australian shepherd Charlie will be at the library at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, March 9 and 23. Kids can read to him in 15-minute slots; six slots are available. Slots can be shared for kids who want to come in together. Call, come in, or visit the library website to register.

St. Pat’s fun

Children in grades K-5 are invited to have a “sham”rocking day at the library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, to celebrate the day before St. Patrick’s Day in style, with bonny stories, games, and a ‘leprechaun trap’ craft.

Register for this free program by visiting the library, calling 419-826-2760, or signing up online at www.swantonpubliclibrary.org. Swanton Library is located at 305 Chestnut St.
