The first step in the Swanton wrestling team’s quest to get back to the state dual tournament is complete, as they picked up wins over Montpelier and Delta at the Division III Regional Quarterfinal Wednesday at Archbold.

The Bulldogs defeated Montpelier 74-6 and Delta 47-27, advancing them to the regional semifinal and final which they will host Wednesday evening.

Delta built an early 18-4 advantage by winning three of the first four matches, including pins from Zack Mattin at 106 pounds and Gabe Meyer at 113 pounds. Their other win came by forfeit at 126 pounds, while Zack Schaller of Swanton earned a 12-2 major decision against Delta’s Jayce Helminiak at 120 pounds.

But, after that the Bulldogs reeled off seven straight wins, three by pin, to essentially put it away.

“We just kept rolling from there,” said Swanton mentor Greg Hallett. “Momentum started going our way a little bit and we wrestled some tough matches.”

The first win in that stretch for the Dogs came by way of Ethan Branum, who pinned Delta’s Kaleb Barnes in the 132-pound match.

“That’s a big win for us there. Absolutely,” said Hallett. “I was excited he came through in the clutch for the team.”

Swanton then got three more pins, one by Gage Pachlhofer at 145 pounds, Mitchell Reisinger (160), and Zack Leahey (182). They also got a forfeit victory at 138 pounds, and decisions for Chase Moore (152) and Ryan Marvin (170).

Swanton forfeited the 195-pound match to get the Panthers back on the board. With the dual out of reach, Delta’s Dalton Richard edged Greg Wilson of Swanton 2-1 in overtime at 220 pounds, then a forfeit went in favor of Swanton’s Tommy Lytle at 285 pounds.

“They are a good team,” said Delta coach Anthony Carrizales of the loss to Swanton. “They’ve got some talented kids. I would say, they are gonna be the team that moves on from our region to the state tournament. I don’t know what else to say besides the fact that, they got some good kids at those weights. Their kids got it done.”

Swanton opened the tournament against Montpelier, who advanced after a 41-30 win over Evergreen. The Dogs scored nine pins against the Locomotives, two forfeits, plus a tech fall for Ian Saunders (152) and a 5-4 win for Zaven Waddell (182).

For Evergreen, they may have been able to knock off Montpelier if not for seven forfeits. In matches in which they had a wrestler to compete, the Vikings garnered five pins and went 5-1.

Winning by fall for the Vikings were Travis Mersing (138), Tony Boger (145), Corey Patterson (152), Brian Floyd (160) and Logan York (182).

Swanton will now face Wayne Trace Wednesday at home starting at 6 p.m. in the regional semifinal. The winner of that dual will take on either Liberty Center or Otsego for the right to represent the region at the state tournament.

On Friday and Saturday, Swanton competed at the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbird Invitational, placing seventh as a team at the 44-team invitational, despite not having their full line-up.

Leading Swanton was Chase Moore, who won the title at 152 pounds. He topped David Cumberledge of St. John 3-2 in the final.

Tommy Lytle was a runner-up for the Dogs. He fell 9-1 to Derrick Elrod of St. John in the 285 pound final.

Ryan Marvin placed third at 160 pounds, Zack Schaller was fifth at 120 pounds, Gage Pachlhofer was sixth at 145 pounds, and Greg Wilson was eighth at 220 pounds.
