The Swanton Bulldog golf team invited two schools from Toledo, Central Catholic and Whitmer, to Valleywood Golf Club to take part in a non-league tri-match on Tuesday. Led by Mark Lair’s 42, the Bulldogs easily outscored Whitmer, one of the biggest schools in the state, by 31 strokes, 182-213, but fell well short of Central’s winning total of 165.

The match was played in nice conditions as it was 82 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze from the South. “It was a beautiful day,” said Lair, a senior who plans on golfing in college. “The greens were playing a little fast, surprisingly. That kind of came into effect with the putting. It was hard to judge some of these greens but it wasn’t too bad.”

The Bulldogs scoring behind Lair were Austin Luce who fired a 46 and Devin Jones and Sam Williams each with a 47. Carter Swank carded a 49. The Irish’s Alex Heran captured medalist honors with a 40.

With this match behind them the Bulldogs enter the most crucial part of their schedule. Currently, in a three-way tie for the NWOAL lead at 3-1 with Archbold and Wauseon, Swanton takes on Archbold and Montpelier Thursday at home then Delta and Evergreen on Monday at White Pines.

“Delta played real well the other day knocking Wauseon off. That was a big help. And obviously our play at Orchard Hills against Bryan and Liberty Center was huge to come away with two points there,” said Swanton coach Eric Oakes, explaining the log jam at the top of the league standings. “We’re back in it and that’s nice.”

Following the league matches, the NWOAL tournament will be held at Auglaize Golf Course in Defiance on Friday, Sept. 25, with a scheduled tee time of 9 a.m.
