DEFIANCE – Swanton wrestling finished a strong weekend at the Fricker’s Duals at Defiance College with a fourth place finish. The Bulldogs were 8-2 on the weekend, losing the third place match to Richmond.
Swanton was undefeated on Friday. They beat Perrysburg 41-33, Logan Elm 58-13, Defiance 51-18, Mechanicsburg 66-15 and Hudson, Mich. 48-18. Hudson is the defending Division IV state champion in Michigan.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs started with a 46-21 win over St. John’s Jesuit.
They then fell to Hartland 33-30, dropping their first match of the tournament to the 2016 Division I state champions from Michigan. The Bulldogs won more contested bouts in the match, but forfeited at 106 and 113 pounds.
They rebounded to trounce Tinora 55-6 before beating Milan Edison 41-33. Edison knocked Swanton out of last year’s Division III state duals tournament on their way to the state championship.
Swanton advanced to the third place match where they fell to Richmond, Michigan’s defending state champion in Division III, by a score of 36-28.
Against Richmond, Trevor Schaller (126) and Dylan Cook (132) each earned pins for the Bulldogs. Zach Schaller (120), Gage Pachlhofer (145), Mitchell Reisinger (170) and Crew Oberheim (195) all won by decision. Chase Moore (152) added a 9-1 major decision.
Moore, Oberheim, Tommy Lytle, Trevor Schaller, and Ryan Marvin lost just one match at the tournament.
Wauseon beat Hartland 44-30 in the final to win the title. The Indians were undefeated over the weekend.
Swanton will be in action again Thursday at Patrick Henry in a NWOAL quad with the Patriots, Liberty Center and Wauseon.
