Pettisville kept tacking on goal after goal in the second half, turning a reasonably close game at halftime into a 9-1 victory on the road at Swanton last Monday in boys soccer.
Each team marked a goal in the first two minutes as Canidate Vickery scored for Pettisville at the 38:57 mark, and Jared Wilson answered for Swanton 40 seconds later.
The Blackbirds took the lead for good when Connor Wyse got past Bulldog goalkeeper Ethan Branum for an open shot, making it 2-1 with 33:40 left in the first half.
Pettisville’s Detric Yoder then scored his first of three goals at the 21:43 mark with a shot from the left side which made it 3-1.
Yoder had another opportunity a little later in the half, but Swanton’s Donovan Avalos got back on defense to redirect the shot away from the goal.
The Bulldogs looked to cut into the Pettisville lead with 8:50 to go as Riley Hensley weaved around a defender and then centered to Zach Schaller. However, Schaller’s shot was off the mark and the difference remained two goals at the half.
The Birds wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half.
At the 34:15 mark, Vickery got control of the ball in front of the net and shot it past Branum to make it 4-1. Preston Stevens then centered one to Eli Grieser for a goal that made it 5-1 not even three minutes later.
The Dogs had some quality looks in the second half but could not capitalize.
Schaller showed good hustle in getting behind the defense on the right side of the net at the 29:44 mark, however, the attempt was grabbed by Pettisville keeper Justin Rupp. Then, with 18:01 remaining, Tanner Callicotte fired a missile from about 15 yards away that the Blackbird goalie got his hands on and deflected up over the net.
Pettisville added goals from Grieser, Yoder (2), and Ben Morris in the final 15 minutes to put a bow on the victory. Outside of Stevens, others recording assists were Landon Roth (2), Blake Eyer, Mitchell Avina, Grieser and Rupp.
Swanton was then in action Thursday where they tied Delta 4-4 in a home match.
