Swanton baseball opened the season by sweeping Toledo Scott in a doubleheader, 26-0 and 20-0 on Saturday.
“(Our) hitters had great approaches all day at the plate. All the pitchers we used pounded the strike zone,” said coach Tim McCarthy of his team’s effort. “Defensively we converted all of our opportunities. We have been stressing pitching and defense all winter/spring. In my eyes, that is how you win games and become a successful team. This (Saturday) was a good step in the right direction.”
In game one, Gunnar Oakes drove in three runs on a pair of hits. Bryce McComb and Michael Lawniczak also had two hits.
Jordon Nyler led the way for Swanton with four RBIs and also got the win on the mound.
Swanton freshman Roman Epley notched his first varsity win on the mound in the second game. Oakes drove in three runs while Lawniczak and Marek Spiess added two apiece.
Epley, McComb, Oakes, Lawniczak, and Spiess all had two hits.
After a game at Evergreen Monday, the Bulldogs travel to Waite tomorrow before hosting Woodward on Thursday. They will then travel to Eastwood next Monday.
Also on Saturday, the Swanton softball team picked up a pair of wins over Woodward.
