There’s a lot of adjectives to describe an athletic event, but the full house that witnessed the Delta and Evergreen boys basketball season finale at Delta Friday night are still searching every thesaurus and dictionary printed for one to chronicle the game between the Panthers and the Vikings.
While both teams shot blanks over each others head, 24 of 101 from the floor combined, Delta made the most of opportunities from the foul line to win their first NWOAL contest of the season, 42-29.
Noah Parsons’ pair of baskets from the key and an Evan Vasquez three-pointer countered eight first quarter points from the Vikes’ Nick Etue to give the Panthers a 13-10 first quarter lead.
Those 23 points looked like an offensive juggernaut compared to what would follow.
Parsons’ drive and score at the 6:41 mark of the second gave Delta a five point lead that Bryce Hudik shaved to three with a rebound hoop 45 seconds later.
Marc Callahan doubled that lead at the 5:10 mark of the second with a three-point play and that was it for the rest of the stanza. Add in a pair of Callahan free throws three minutes later as Delta took a 20-12 halftime lead.
Bowen Green’s putback got the Delta lead to 24-14 in the third before Phoenix VanOstrand hit back-to-back hoops to chop the score to 24-18 with 4:33 left.
However, consecutive baskets by Green on a baseline jumper and a stickback bumped the lead to 28-15 that the Panthers extended to 32-20 from the foul stripe before the end of the period.
The Vikings’ Chandler Lumbrezer tripled to open the fourth but Evergreen went 0 for 13 the rest of the night, getting just six free throws the rest of the quarter while Vasquez iced the game for the Panthers from their own foul line, going 4 for 4 in the final minute.
Vasquez had 15 to lead all scorers while Etue’s 10 led Evergreen.
For the game, Evergreen shot s frigid 18 percent on 10 for 52 from the floor. Delta went 14 of 49 for 28 percent.
Evergreen plays in the first round of the Division III sectional at Oak Harbor against Otsego, a team the Vikings defeated 61-56 during the season, Wednesday at approximately 8 p.m.
Delta plays at Defiance against Patrick Henry also on Wednesday night, at 7 p.m.
