ARCHBOLD – Eight Swanton wrestlers are moving on to the Division III district wrestling tournament. The Bulldogs had one runner-up, three third place finishers, and four fourth place finishes en route to a fourth place team finish at the Archbold Sectional on Saturday.
Chase Moore was the highest finisher for Swanton, placing second at 132 pounds. Moore opened the tournament with a 30 second pin of Charles Clapsadlle of Paulding before topping Reilly Heater of Faiview 4-2 to advance to the final.
Jake Spiess won the 132 title over Moore by injury default.
Trevor Schaller opened the tournament at 106 pounds with a 12-0 major decision over Austin Baker of Archbold. But eventual champion Cole Mattin topped him 11-3 in the semifinal.
Trevor Schaller rebounded by pinning Aidan McAlexander of Antwerp in 48 seconds, then topping Jordan Bowers of Tinora by major decision, 12-1, to take third place.
At 126 pounds, Swanton’s J.D. Reisinger opened with a 42 second pin of Tre Hutchinson of Montpelier. But Reisinger was pinned by C.J. Leffler of Delta in 1:14 in the semifinal.
Reisinger responded by pinning Tyler Kay of Liberty Center and scoring a 12-0 major decision over Tony Boger of Evergreen for third.
Swanton’s Zack Leahey opened with a pin of Edgerton’s Blake Hohler of Edgerton in 2:00 at 145 pounds. Leahey was defeated by eventual champion Travis Barnes of Delta, 7-2, to fall to the consolation bracket.
But, he beat Thomas Wolfenbarger of Montpelier in a major decision, 10-1, then in another major decision, beat Logan Shanner of Antwerp 14-4 in the consolation final.
Also advancing after finishing fourth for Swanton were Zack Schaller at 113 pounds, Ryan Marvin at 138 pounds, Greg Wilson at 195 pounds, and Tommy Lytle at 285 pounds.
Evergreen had three wrestlers place in the top four. Jared Fahrer was runner-up at 106 pounds after falling to Delta’s Cole Mattin 9-2 in the final.
Boger and Mason Kasefang placed fourth for the Vikings.
Delta claimed the team title with 298 points as eight Panthers won individual titles. Archbold was second with 175 points, followed by Tinora 155 and Swanton 134.
The district tournament will begin Friday at 4 p.m. at Toledo Waite High School. Action continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The top four in each weight class will advance to the state tournament.
