MONTPELIER – With several of their better wrestlers absent, Swanton wrestling finished seventh at the NWOAL tournament on Saturday at Montpelier. This put them at sixth in the final league standings.

Delta claimed the league crown, their third in the last four years, with a first place finish and team score of 282 points. Wauseon was runner-up with 213 points.

“I always tell them the biggest thing with the league (tournament) is it’s about pride,” said Panther coach Anthony Carrizales. “Obviously, it is not the end all for the season, but it is definitely that local pride that is involved. It’s nice to come and have a good showing this weekend.”

Winning individual titles for the Panthers were Cole Mattin at 106 pounds, Ross Rayfield (113), Drew Mattin (120), Jake Spiess (132), Dustin Marteney (138), Jesse Beverly (160) and Devon Richard (220).

Swanton had a pair of third place finishers in Zack Leahey at 145 pounds and Tommy Lytle at 285.

Leahey went 3-1 overall, including a 4-1 decision against Kody Kregulka in the third place match. Lytle finished third after going 2-1, winning the third place match 6-3 over Bryan’s Christian Riddle.

The Bulldogs also got placements from Trevor Schaller (106), Tyler Houston (152), Mitchell Reisinger (160), Greg Wilson (195) and Branson Knott (220).

They probably would have gotten more as well, but Dylan Cook, Chase Moore and Crew Oberheim missed the tournament with injuries, and senior J.D. Reisinger was out sick. Moore and J.D. Reisinger were both state placers last season.

Also in the area, Evergreen had a total of six placers. The Vikings day was highlighted by Jared Fahrer who took second to Cole Mattin of Delta at 106 pounds.

Other placers for the Vikings were Travis Mersing (113), Thomas Pollard (138), Mason Kasefang (145), Isaac Yunker (152) and Jace Jenkins (195).
