In a constant back and forth game, late game free throws weren’t enough to put the Bulldogs ahead of Cardinal Stritch. Despite a big night from Swanton senior Kyleigh Ramlow, who scored 24 points, the Bulldogs fell 52-50 last Monday.

The Dogs had a game reminiscent of their recent loss to Toledo Christian, where they led for most of the game, but faltered towards the end. The game started off strong for the Bulldogs with an early three-pointer from Ramlow and a drive from Nelson netting them a 7-6 lead in the low scoring first quarter.

The momentum carried into the second quarter, when another big three from Ramlow gave the team a boost of confidence, leading to a pair scores from sophomores Cydney Christensen and Haley Nelson, giving the Dogs a tight 18-16 lead going into the half.

Going into the third quarter the tone remained the same, a tight lead by the Bulldogs maintained by back and forth action from both sides. Ramlow led the quarter in points, with another three point shot and two more drives.

The fourth quarter told a different story for the Bulldogs. The Cardinals took an early lead due to three point shots from Kama Hardy and Taylor Besgrove, putting the Bulldogs in a tense situation.

The Bulldogs needed clutch free throw shots to trim the lead, and Christensen and Ramlow thrived under the pressure, hitting 8 out of the 9 late game free throws, including a flashy and 1 from Ramlow. But the story was similar on the on the other side of the court, with Cardinal Stritch hitting 7 out of their 11 free throws. As the clock ticked down, the Bulldogs ran out of opportunities to even the score, ending the game 52-50.

“I was thinking hopefully we can get a rebound, they worked hard the whole game it’s just a couple rebounds got away from us at the end, could’ve been a different outcome,” said Swanton coach Eric Oakes of his late game thoughts. “Missed some early shots and opportunities, but the rebounding at the end is what really hurt us.”

The game was the final home game for the Swanton seniors.

¨I think the Bulldogs are gonna do great, as long as they keep working hard,” Ramlow said of the Bulldogs going forwad. “And I’ve got to keep working hard myself; nothing comes easy.”

The Bulldogs finished the week with a Tuesday victory over Hilltop 43-34 and a Friday NWOAL loss to Montpelier, 44-37.

Swanton wraps up the regular season with a game today at Ottawa Hills and Tuesday at Otsego.
