Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated recently announced Owen LaPlante from Swanton, has been awarded a $5,000 All in for CF Scholarship to support his attendance at Xavier University. Vertex awarded 80 All in for CF scholarships totaling $400,000 to people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their immediate family members for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The All in for CF Scholarship program was established in 2017 to help people living with CF and their family members pursue two-year, four-year or graduate degrees. LaPlante, an 18-year-old child of a parent living with CF, is a member of the 2018-2019 class of Vertex All in for CF scholars and is working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. He currently attends St. Francis De Sales High School.

“As a son of a CF patient, I’ve experienced the ups and downs along with my dad—multiple hospital stays, oxygen dependence and missing out on day to day activities,” said Owen. “My dad amazes me daily. He is so strong and so thankful for his second chance in life. We value every moment together.”

The All in for CF scholarships complement other Vertex initiatives that help people with CF live active lives, improve awareness of CF, and further the study of CF. Part of Vertex’s 10-year, $500 million corporate giving commitment, the company has awarded 120 All in for CF Scholarships since initiating the program last year.

“From people living with cystic fibrosis returning to school following lung transplants, to brothers and sisters inspired by their sibling’s courageous fights, the determination of All in for CF Scholarship recipients is remarkable,” said Jeffrey Leiden, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vertex. “They are examples of the many families who inspire us in our relentless pursuit to discover and develop transformative CF medicines.”

Scholarship recipients were chosen by an independent committee of CF community members based on a submitted essay and an applicant’s demonstrated level of community involvement, financial need, and academic achievement. Vertex thanks the members of the CF community who volunteered to serve on the selection committee for their time and commitment.
