The Fulton County Health Department is reminding area residents that it is important to remember that wellness is being in good physical and good mental health. Mental health, or mental wellness, is just as important as your physical health.
Because mental health and physical health are linked, problems in one area can impact the other. At the same time, improving your physical health can also benefit your mental health, and vice versa, according to the health department. It is important to make healthy choices for both your physical and mental well-being.
Many people may believe achieving good mental wellness is about being happy, but it is about knowing how to cope with stressful situations and achieving balance in your life. Achieving this balance requires some work, just as your physical health does. Here are a few activities that can help you improve your sense of mental wellness:
– Physical Activity: Moving around and getting the heart rate up causes the body to release endorphins, or hormones that make the body and mind feel good. Exercising can also provide some stress relief.
– Music and Singing: Listening to music or singing along to your favorite song can reduce stress, help you get better sleep and improve your mood. Some studies have shown that listening to a song that you love releases the hormone dopamine that makes us feel good. You may have experienced this while driving and your favorite song comes on the radio.
– Practicing Self-Care: It is important to set aside time every day to allow yourself to relax and escape the stress of life. Give yourself a private, mini vacation from everything going on around you. You may feel this is impossible because you are so busy, but only one minute can make the difference. Practice self-care right now by closing your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
– Spending Time with Furry Friends: Taking care of a pet can help distract the mind from stressful thoughts and provide a sense of achievement. There are many studies that show pets can have a calming effect on their owner.
Even if you are experiencing challenges or illness in your life, you can still improve your mental wellness, health department officials said. Life sometimes gives you lemons, but always remember to take a step back for your mental health and make a little lemonade by thinking just one positive thought like “I am in charge of how I feel and right now I choose happiness.”

They will be on billboards, ads on screen before movies at local cinemas, radio commercials, and by searching the hashtag #4YourMentalHealth on social media.
