The Swanton Chamber of Commerce will hold the Fourth Annual Swanton Juried Fine Art Exhibit and sale in the Valleywood Golf Club banquet room on Saturday and Sunday.

There will be 180 pieces of fine art on exhibit and for sale presented by 68 artists from 24 cities from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana in nine different categories, including oils, water colors, drawings, mixed media, and photography. Art valued at over $40,000 will be available to view or purchase.

Adult and youth art will be judged and awarded separately, and all the art will be framed and hung on panels that were recently purchased in partnership with Swanton Local Schools.

“One of our goals for this art exhibit is to really help promote fine art in the Swanton community and especially through the schools,” said Neil Toeppe, Swanton Chamber executive director.

In addition to providing the local art community a venue to display and possibly sell their work, the exhibit also provides young artists a place to showcase their talents in front of experienced, knowledgeable, and respected art critics.

“When you look at the recognition the students get from playing sports, having an opportunity to perform in front of crowds and demonstrate their skills, it’s a wonderful thing,” Toeppe said. “But what we don’t see is the creative talent being put on display at the level sports are. Now, instead of creative students having their art work taped to the walls in classrooms, they will be able to display their art on panels in a professional manner in conjunction with the performing arts.”

In 2016, over $3,000 in prizes and scholarships were awarded to student artists.

The exhibit is free and open to the public Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

On Friday at 7 p.m. there will be an Artist and Patron Reception. There is no charge for all submitting artists, and tickets are $15 for admission with complimentary hors d’oeuvres.

For tickets to the Friday reception, call the Swanton Chamber of Commerce at 419-826-1941.
